CICERO, Ill. (April 27, 2002) -- Miles Childers & L. T. B. Inc.'s Emeraldforajudge sprinted to a clear lead right out of the starting gate and held off a late challenge from Summer Again to earn a 3-length win in the $100,000 National Jockey Club Oaks Saturday at Sportsman's Park. The Bernard Flint-trained filly covered the mile and a sixteenth over a sloppy track in 1:47.14.

The win, her first in three starts this year and third in 12 starts overall, was worth $90,000 and boosted her career bankroll to $158,380. The daughter of Judge T C took the field through fractions of 23.76 for the quarter mile, 48.55 for the half mile and a three-quarter mile split of 1:14.17.

"She was a little rank on me the first half mile and I was a little worried," said winning jockey Larry Sterling Jr. "Then she started to settle down and she was fine from there. I thought I had a real good shot of winning when we turned for home."

Summer Delight, nearly 10 lengths off the lead turning for home, made a mild rally to finish second, 6 lengths clear from third-place finisher Persimmon Ridge. First Again, the 9-10 post time favorite, finished fourth. Gracility, Our Chequer Flag and Elementary completed the order of finish through the wire. Gracility was subsequently disqualified from fifth and placed sixth for interference to Our Chequer Flag on the far turn.

"She stumbled pretty good leaving and she just never recovered," said Mark Guidry who rode the beaten favorite. "She was up and down the whole race, never leveled off. She tried all right. I thought the leader was getting a little soft and my filly did make a little bitty run, but that was it."

"She had never run in the slop before and the way it looks to me she just didn't handle it today," added First Again's trainer W. Elliott Walden. "We'll try again another day. That's all we can do."

Sent off as the second choice in the wagering, Emeraldforajudge paid $8.20, $5.00 and $4.00. Summer Delight paid $6.20 and $4.00. Persimmon Ridge paid $7.20.
