ARROYO LEAVES SPORTSMANíS PARK, REJOINS ILLINOIS RACING BOARD AS CHIEF STATE STEWARD AT CHICAGO-AREA THOROUGHBRED TRACKS

SPORTSMANíS PARK, Cicero, Ill., Jan. 11 -- H. Eddie Arroyo has resigned his position as general manager of the National Jockey Club at Sportsmanís Park to rejoin the Illinois Racing Board as Senior State Steward at all Chicago-area thoroughbred tracks.

Arroyo announced his resignation in a joint statement with National Jockey Club president Charles W. Bidwill III.

"When this new opportunity came along I decided after much deliberation that it was the best decision for me at this stage of my career," said Arroyo, who joined the National Jockey Club in 1995 and was named general manager the following year.

Arroyo, who enjoyed much success during a 12-year career as a jockey, first joined the Illinois Racing Board as an assistant steward in 1979. He was named a steward the following year, and three years later was appointed Senior State Steward, a position he held until 1990 when he left to join the executive staff of Arlington Park as assistant to the president.

"Eddie Arroyo has been a valuable asset to the National Jockey Club family," Bidwill said. "While I am sorry to see him leave us here at Sportsmanís Park, I am thrilled he will remain part of Thoroughbred racing in Illinois."

Arroyo is a member of the Chicago Sports Hall of Fame.
