Changes to the World Thoroughbred Rankings through August 25
CANDY RIDE FIRST IN CLASSIC DIVISION - POWERED BY DODGE; FALBRAV TIED FOR SECOND IN JOHN DEERE TURF; OASIS DREAM MOVES TO SECOND IN NETJETS MILE DIVISION
DODGE CLASSIC DIVISION – Sid and Jenny Craig’s CANDY RIDE (ARG) moves to No. 1 in the division following his stellar performance in winning Sunday’s grade I, Pacific Classic at Del Mar over previous No. 1 MEDAGLIA D’ORO by 3 1/2 lengths in track record time. Trained by Ron McAnally and ridden to victory by Julie Krone, Candy Ride earned a 126 rating from the rankings panel. Medaglia d’Oro is now tied for second place in the division with MINESHAFT and MOON BALLAD (IRE). By winning the grade I Travers Stakes for three-year-olds at Saratoga on Saturday, TEN MOST WANTED is now alone in eighth place, ahead of Travers runner-up PEACE RULES, who falls to ninth place, and defending Breeders’ Cup Classic winner VOLPONI in 10th. STRONG HOPE, third in the Travers, drops out of the Top 10.
JOHN DEERE TURF – FALBRAV (IRE), an impressive winner of the Juddmonte International at York on August 19 for trainer Luca Cumani, rises out of a ninth-place tie and into second place along with Arlington Million winner SULAMANI. NAYEF, third at York, drops from third into a fifth-place tie with ANGE GABRIEL (FR), defending John Deere Turf winner HIGH CHAPARRAL (IRE) and STORMING HOME.
NEXTEL DISTAFF – UNCHANGED
NETJETS MILE – Following last Thursday’s victory by Khalid Abdullah’s OASIS DREAM (GB) in the Nunthorpe Stakes at York, trainer John Gosden announced that Oasis Dream is now a candidate for the NetJets Mile. TILLERMAN and SOVIET SONG (IRE), both ninth last week, drop out of the Top 10.
SPRINT – With Oasis Dream now being pointed to the NetJets Mile, the Bobby Frankel-trained ALDEBARAN assumes the No.1 ranking in the division. VALID VIDEO, winner of Saturday’s grade I King’s Bishop for three-year-olds at Saratoga, zooms into fourth place.
FILLY & MARE TURF – ISLINGTON (IRE), winner of the group 1 Yorkshire Oaks at York last Wednesday, moves from eighth place into a five-way logjam for third with DUBLINO, VOODOO DANCER, BRIGHT SKY (IRE) and HEAT HAZE (GB).
WORLD THOROUGHBRED RANKINGS
The following are World Thoroughbred Rankings for the top 10 horses in each racing division for the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships, to be held October 25 during the Oak Tree meeting at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif. The World Thoroughbred Rankings are established by an international panel of racing secretaries and handicappers. Rankings are determined by an analysis of the horses' past performances in graded and group stakes races around the world through the date of ranking. The rankings will be published weekly through October 7.
The rankings will be part of the criteria used to determine horses' qualifications to participate in the World Thoroughbred Championships. The rankings currently reflect six of the eight Breeders' Cup divisions: Nextel Distaff, Filly & Mare Turf, NetJets Mile, Sprint, John Deere Turf, and Dodge Classic. Rankings for Bessemer Trust Juvenile and Juvenile Fillies divisions will begin in late summer.
