BREEDERS’ CUP WORLD THOROUGHBRED CHAMPIONSHIPS TV COVERAGE EXPANDS IN UNITED KINGDOM; ALSO WILL INCLUDE HIGH DEFINITION TELECAST IN UNITED STATES
The National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) and Breeders’ Cup Limited today announced that the Oct. 26 Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships, to be televised live in its entirety by NBC Sports from 1:00-6:00 p.m. Eastern, will be televised in high-definition (HD) format by NBC affiliates in the United States that have HD capabilities. HD Net (Channel 199 on Direct TV) will deliver the high-definition signal to the NBC affiliates and replay the NBC telecast from 7:00 p.m. to midnight (Eastern) on Oct. 26. For the first time in England, highlights of the Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships also will be televised by the BBC and Channel 4.
The BBC telecast, which features highlights from all eight Breeders’ Cup races, airs Sunday, Oct. 27 at 2:00 p.m. local. The Channel 4 telecast begins on Sunday morning at 12:35 a.m. local and augments the network’s “Morning Line” coverage on Oct. 26, which will spotlight the Breeders’ Cup for an audience of one million viewers.
At the Races, the new racing television network and wagering service for the United Kingdom, will provide commingled pari-mutuel wagering on the Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships and will broadcast all eight Championships races via Sky Digital Television.
“We are pleased to have substantially expanded the telecast of the World Thoroughbred Championships in the United Kingdom and to offer our American viewers the opportunity to enjoy the Breeders’ Cup races in high-definition format,” said D.G. Van Clief, Jr., president of Breeders’ Cup Limited.
The Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships is distributed internationally by NBC Enterprises. NBC Sports has carried the event since its inception in 1984. The World Thoroughbred Championships is being held at Arlington Park in Arlington Heights, Ill.
