"LONG JOHN SILVER'S WIRE TO WIRE" TO DEBUT THURSDAY ON ESPN
The newly branded "Long John Silver's Wire to Wire," a half-hour, weekly horseracing program from the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA), debuts Thursday, May 2 on ESPN2 at 2:00 p.m. (ET) with a special Kentucky Derby edition originating from Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., site of the 128th Run for the Roses.
"Wire to Wire" succeeds the long-running "Racehorse Digest" and in the future will air in the standard "Digest" timeslots of 2:00 p.m. (ET) Wednesdays on ESPN2 and 5:30 a.m. (ET) Saturdays on ESPN (repeat airing). Jeff Medders will host the show along with ESPN horseracing analyst Randy Moss. Chris Lincoln, Kenny Rice and Jeannine Edwards will also contribute news and feature reporting.
The show, produced by NTRA Productions, will feature new animation, signage, music and a redesigned set. Among the segments to be scheduled are "NTRA Great Stakes," a preview of the upcoming weekend's top stakes; "Final Furlongs," focusing on recent races, including the "Long John Silver's Race of the Week;" "Speed," a segment on American Quarter Horse racing; "Over the Fences," a look at steeplechase events; "CITGO Pick 6," a free, handicapping interactive game presented by CITGO and featured on ESPN.com that is easy to play and awards valuable prizes; and "Racehorse Retro," a look at upcoming stakes races, in historical context, produced in conjunction with ESPN Classic.
"Wire to Wire," also will present timely news about horseracing, including highlights of the previous week's major races, previews of upcoming top stakes and feature segments on the sport's personalities, including horses, jockeys, trainers, owners, breeders and track management.
"The new 'Wire to Wire' promises to build our audience for Thoroughbred racing," said NTRA Commissioner Tim Smith. "The re-branding and new in-show segments afford a substantially improved presentation of our sport, both for our 'light' fans, who will appreciate its educational components, and for our core audience who follow racing on a regular basis.
"The show's weekly presence also gives continuity to our re-branding of the 'Road to' races leading up to the World Thoroughbred Championships and provides our sponsors with a regular platform for reaching their target audience of horseracing consumers." "Wire to Wire" title sponsor Long John Silver's today was announced as the newest sponsor of the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships (see separate release).
The NTRA is a broad-based coalition of horseracing interests, including the American Quarter Horse Association, charged with increasing popularity of horseracing and improving economic conditions for industry participants. The NTRA and Breeders' Cup Limited also conduct the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships, Thoroughbred racing's year-end Championships consisting of eight races and $13 million in purses and awards, the Breeders' Cup Stakes Program and the Great State Challenge. The NTRA has offices in Lexington, Ky., and New York City. NTRA press releases appear on the NTRA Web site, NTRA.com.
