IMUS TO AGAIN TEAM WITH NTRA IN TRIPLE CROWN PROMOTION
Don Imus, host of the nationally-syndicated "Imus in the Morning" radio program, will again join forces with the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) as a partner in an ongoing Triple Crown promotion. The "Imus in the Morning" radio program, broadcast weekday mornings in 77 markets in 33 states to an estimated 10 million listeners each day, is also simulcast on the MSNBC cable television network.
The promotion will kickoff on Thursday, May 2, when the NTRA makes a $40,000 donation to the Imus Ranch during a live, remote broadcast from the New York Stock Exchange. The Imus Ranch, located in Reader's Digest, N.M., provides an opportunity for children with cancer and siblings of children who were victims of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome to experience life on a working cattle ranch.
In addition to the May 2 donation, the NTRA will provide an additional $10,000 for Imus to wager on each of the three Triple Crown races, starting with the May 4 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. Any net profits resulting from the $30,000 in cumulative wagers will additionally go to the Imus Ranch. As was the case during last year's Triple Crown promotion, Mike Francesa, a top sportstalk host at the "Imus in the Morning" flagship station, WFAN in New York, will make the Triple Crown selections on behalf of Imus. During last year's NTRA promotion, the Imus/Francesa team made winning wagers on Point Given in both the Preakness and Belmont Stakes that netted the Imus Ranch a total of more than $70,000.
Also as part of the promotion, Francesa will host his popular "Mike and the Mad Dog" afternoon radio program live from Churchill Downs on Kentucky Oaks day, Friday, May 3. The "Mike and the Mad Dog" show will also broadcast live from Belmont Park on Friday, June 7, the day before this year's final jewel of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes.
"We're delighted to once again team up with Don Imus, Mike Francesa and everyone connected with the 'Imus in the Morning' and 'Mike and the Mad Dog' programs," said Keith Chamblin, senior vice president-marketing & industry relations for the NTRA. "This promotion affords outstanding nationwide exposure to the Triple Crown in the name of a terrific cause. I only hope that Mike Francesa's handicapping is as sharp this year as it was last Spring."
The NTRA is a broad-based coalition of horseracing interests, including the American Quarter Horse Association, charged with increasing popularity of horseracing and improving economic conditions for industry participants. The NTRA and Breeders' Cup Limited also conduct the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships, Thoroughbred racing's year-end Championships consisting of eight races and $13 million in purses and awards, the Breeders' Cup Stakes Program and the Great State Challenge. The NTRA has offices in Lexington, Ky., and New York City. NTRA press releases appear on the NTRA Web site, NTRA.com.
