"CITGO RACING TO THE KENTUCKY DERBY" RESUMES WITH LOUISIANA & EL CAMINO REAL DERBYS; SHOW TO AIR SUNDAY NIGHT ON ESPN2
"Citgo Racing to the Kentucky Derby" resumes on the ESPN networks this Sunday, March 10, with a pair of Visa Triple Crown prep races, the Grade II, $750,000 Louisiana Derby from the Fair Grounds in New Orleans, and the Grade III, $200,000 El Camino Real Derby from Golden Gate Fields in Albany, Calif. The National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA)-produced show will air via tape delay on ESPN2 from 11:00 pm-Midnight (ET).
The 1 1/16 miles Louisiana Derby has produced one Kentucky Derby winner, Grindstone, in 1996. Aboard that day was five-time Eclipse Award winner Jerry Bailey, who will ride Repent in this year's race. The 2001 Bessemer Trust Breeders' Cup Juvenile runner-up is coming off a win in the Grade III Risen Star Stakes at the Fair Grounds and should be the favorite on Sunday. Another victory in New Orleans and Repent could emerge as a Derby favorite, with a real shot at the $1 million bonus awaiting any horse that wins both the Louisiana and Kentucky Derbys.
Among those expected to challenge Repent are the horses that finished right behind him in the Risen Star, Bob's Image and Easyfromthegitgo.
Although Santa Anita Derby candidates Siphonic and Came Home have been tabbed the West coast's leading Derby horses, Saturday's 1 1/16 miles El Camino Real Derby could determine whether any 3-year-olds on the Northern California circuit are Triple Crown worthy. Among those likely to start in that race are the Bob Baffert-trained Danthebluegrassman, Cappuchino, Yougottawanna and Captain Squire.
Hosting Sunday's telecast will be Jeff Medders, joined by Charlsie Cantey and Dave Johnson.
