ONLINE CHALLENGE TO OFFER TOP PRIZE OF $1 MILLION
The $1,000,000 World Thoroughbred Championships Challenge will officially launch on Monday, Sept. 10, it was announced today by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA). The promotion, an Internet- and e-mail-based sweepstakes to promote the Oct. 27 Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships at Belmont Park, offers participants the opportunity to win $1 million by correctly selecting the winners of all eight Breeders' Cup races. More than 100 additional prizes will be awarded to fans at other levels of game success, based on the number of winners they select.
Registrants will receive a series of 10 customized e-mail messages about the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships. The e-mails, to be written by noted Thoroughbred racing handicapper and commentator David Gutfreund, will include previews and recaps of key "Road to the World Thoroughbred Championships" races, as well as hotlinks to an online racing glossary, TV schedules and other pertinent information. Special, live chats featuring racing stars will also be held exclusively for Challenge participants.
Fans may register at www.ntra.com or www.breederscup.com between now and Oct. 27. From Oct. 24 through 1:00 p.m. (ET) on Oct. 27, they will have the opportunity to submit their Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships picks via the Internet.
"The $1,000,000 World Thoroughbred Championships Challenge is designed to engage potential new fans, enrich the Breeders' Cup experience of existing fans and, at the same time, further build our growing database of horseracing's customers," said Keith Chamblin, the NTRA's senior vice president-marketing and industry relations. "We're hoping one lucky fan will walk away with the million dollars."
The promotion will be advertised through Internet media, including espn.com, sportsline.com and other mass consumer sites; "The Road to the World Thoroughbred Championships" telecasts on the ESPN networks; as well as banner ads on ntra.com, breederscup.com and Daily Racing Form's site, drf.com. NTRA Productions will provide Web site design, e-mail campaign and database management services for the $1,000,000 World Thoroughbred Championships Challenge.
The NTRA is a broad-based coalition of horseracing interests, including the American Quarter Horse Association, charged with increasing awareness of Thoroughbred racing and improving economic conditions for industry participants. The NTRA also conducts the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships, racing's year-end Championship consisting of eight races and $13 million in purses and awards, and the Breeders' Cup National Stakes Program, which are funded by the industry's owners and breeders.
