THOROUGHBRED CLASSICS RETURNS WITH HASKELL INVITATIONAL RETROSPECTIVE
13-Episode Series To Air on ESPN Classic In Connection with The Road to the World Thoroughbred Championships
"Thoroughbred Classics," a series that spotlights some of horseracing's greatest races, has returned following a two-month hiatus. Last spring, the series focused on horseracing's Triple Crown. This summer and fall, the 13-episode series, that airs on ESPN Classic, will serve as a lead up to the 2001 Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships.
First up for the current series, which airs in conjunction with "The Road to the World Thoroughbred Championships" series seen on ESPN and ESPN2, is a look back at the Haskell Invitational, the Monmouth Park (NJ) race for three-year-olds that often serves as a major stepping stone to the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships. The Haskell program, which first aired on Wednesday night was repeated earlier this morning. It will air twice more tomorrow at 9:30-10:00 a.m. (ET) and 5:30-6:00 p.m. (ET).
The 2001 Haskell, to be shown this Sunday as part of the "Road To" series on ESPN2 from 6:00-7:00 p.m. (ET), marks the return to the racetrack of Point Given, winner of this year's Preakness and Belmont Stakes, who is pointing to the 2001 Breeders' Cup Classic.
Among those who competed in the Haskell and went on to capture the Breeders' Cup Classic are Alysheba (2nd in 1987 Haskell, won 1988 Classic), Concern (3rd in 1994 Haskell, won 1994 Classic), Skip Away (won 1966 Haskell and 1997 Classic) and Cat Thief (2nd in 1999 Haskell, won 1999 Classic). Cherokee Run finished fourth in the 1994 Haskell before winning the same year's Breeders' Cup Sprint.
Jim McKay and Jack Whitaker, two horseracing broadcast legends, host "Thoroughbred Classics." ESPN Classic is now available in 40 million homes across the country.
