NTRA AND DAILY RACING FORM LAUNCH BREEDERS' CUP FANTASY GAMES
The National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) and Daily Racing Form today announced the launch of two new fantasy games surrounding this year's Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships: the "Breeders' Cup Handicapping Championship," presented by YouBet.com, and the "Breeders' Cup SuperScope Fantasy Game," presented by TVG. The package represents the first creation of fantasy-style online games focusing on the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships.
The games can be accessed at the Daily Racing Form Web site, drf.com, the NTRA site, ntra.com, or the Breeders' Cup site, breederscup.com.
The "Breeders' Cup Handicapping Championship," a pay-to-play game, is a rotisserie-style competition whereby players create a "stable" of horses in each of the eight Breeders' Cup divisions. Horses in a player's stable may then be activated, with players accruing earnings based on win, place and show mutuel prices. All graded stakes races are eligible for scoring, beginning with the Aug. 4 Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga and ending with the Oct. 26 First Flight Handicap at Belmont Park. The grand prize is $10,000 cash, with the top four finishers qualifying for the $200,000 Daily Racing Form/NTRA National Handicapping Championship in Las Vegas as the "Breeders' Cup" team. The game is $49.99 to enter.
The "Breeders' Cup SuperScope Fantasy Game" is a free-to-play game. In one part, players attempt to choose the winners of two selected graded stakes races per week. In the other part, players attempt to forecast the winners of all eight Breeders' Cup races. The sooner a player chooses a winner, the more points he or she receives for that selection. Prizes include a deluxe trip to both the 2001 and 2002 Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships.
"Online sports fantasy games have proven one of the best forms of e-marketing, and we're delighted to offer this to racing fans," said Damon Thayer, NTRA vice president-Breeders' Cup marketing. "These games provide the perfect platform to promote the new 'Road to the World Thoroughbred Championships.'"
Fantasy Sports Net developed the games in conjunction with NTRA marketing partner Daily Racing Form. Founded in the spring of 1999, Fantasy Sports Net creates, markets and distributes premium fantasy sports games via the Internet. Full rules and prize lists can be found within the game sites.
Daily Racing Form, "America's Turf Authority Since 1894," for Thoroughbred racing horseplayers and professionals throughout North America, is the only daily national newspaper in the U.S. dedicated solely to the coverage of a single sport. Daily Racing Form was purchased in August 1998 by a group of investors led by Alpine Capital Group of New York and Steven Crist, editor and publisher of the Form.
The NTRA is a broad-based coalition of horseracing interests, including the American Quarter Horse Association, charged with increasing awareness of Thoroughbred racing and improving economic conditions for industry participants. The NTRA also conducts the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships, Thoroughbred racing's year-end Championships consisting of eight races and $13 million in purses and awards, and the Breeders' Cup National Stakes Program, which are funded by the industry's owners and breeders. The NTRA has offices in Lexington, Ky., and New York City. A compendium of NTRA press releases appears on the NTRA Web site, ntra.com, and at the Web site for the Breeders' Cup Championship, breederscup.com. Contact the NTRA at email@example.com.
