JOCKEY CLUB ISSUES CALL FOR 2001 LIVE FOAL/NO FOAL REPORTS

In the wake of a rash of foal deaths in Kentucky and surrounding states, The Jockey Club is asking all breeders to submit their 2001 Live Foal/No Foal Reports as soon as possible after the birth of the foal or when it is determined that a mare will not produce a live foal this year.

"Early submission of Live Foal/No Foal Reports serves a dual purpose this year," said Jockey Club Registrar, Edward A. "Buddy" Bishop. "First, it allows us to continue an orderly transition to DNA typing by identifying dams of live foals which have not yet been DNA-typed. But just as important, we can begin assembling hard numbers in relation to the recent syndrome of foal loss in Kentucky and surrounding areas.

"Losing a foal is a tragic situation for everyone involved and submission of a No Foal Report is probably not high on the list of priorities after such an occurrence," he added. "But given the importance of reliable numbers on which the industry can assess the impact of the situation, we are encouraging breeders to submit their reports as early as possible."

Submission of a Live Foal/No Foal Report is the second step in the registration process for foals of 2001 and is to be completed within 30 days of the birth of the foal or when it is determined that a mare will not have a live foal.

Jockey Club Interactive™ is the quickest and easiest way to submit Live Foal/No Foal Reports and is available at no charge on the Internet. Owners and breeders can sign up for the service through the "Interactive Registry" icon on The Jockey Club home page at http://home.jockeyclub.com. Otherwise, completed Live Foal/No Foal Reports should be mailed to The Jockey Club, 821 Corporate Drive, Lexington, KY 40503-2794.
