GRAYSON-JOCKEY CLUB INCREASES MRLS RESEARCH FUNDING

Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation is funding a new project with the Kentucky Association of Equine Practitioners to seek critical information on Mare Reproductive Loss Syndrome (MRLS). The project will involve monitoring of mares to seek additional information as to whether tent caterpillars and/or their waste are associated with fetal loss.

"We felt it was urgent that this study be undertaken immediately, at the same time of year associated with the massive loss of foals last year," said Dr. Woody Asbury of the Foundation. "This should more definitively establish a linkage or lack of linkage with this phenomenon."

The study will be conducted by Dr. Bill Bernard, president of the KAEP, and will be monitored for Grayson-Jockey Club by Dr. Asbury.

"This project is the latest in a series of research efforts we have funded, or co-funded, over the last year in response to MRLS," said Foundation president Edward L. Bowen. "We appreciate the dedication of key equine veterinarians in donating their services for this project and are glad to provide funding for the acquisitions, testing, and other necessary costs directly involved in the research."

Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation funds research throughout North America devoted solely to furthering the health, safety and soundness of horses. The Foundation this year will fund 23 projects for a total of more than $800,000 and in the last two decades has provided over two dozen universities with more than $9.5 million to underwrite 180 specific projects. The Foundation is funded by private contributions and membership fees, and membership is open to any interested party.
