Illinois Stakes Provide Exciting Finishes
Illinois runners were featured in six state-restricted stakes and a few of those who were expected to win did, while others came out of the clouds for upset triumphs.
Peach Of It Handicap
In the Peach Of It Handicap, favored three-year-old Julie's Prize grabbed the victory in her first start against older runners. The Anthony Mitchell trainee laid near the back of the pack early under jockey Larry Sterling, Jr and waited for a hole to open on the inside. When the hole opened, she went through on her way to a neck victory. Longshot Fly by You ran on well for second while Nurse Margurita closed from the back of the pack to finish third. Julie's Prize returned $4.60, $3.40 & $2.80. Fly by You came back $16.60 and $10.80 while Nurse Margurita returned $13.40 to show.
Governor's Lady Handicap
Older fillies and mares battled in the six-furlong Governor's Lady as Seven Brides was the star of the show. Trained by Hawthorne Hall of Famer Richard Hazelton, Seven Brides battled near the lead throughout and emerged on top, going on to a 2½ length win under jockey Carlos Silva. Closing well to finish second in the Governor's Lady was Win Won while Come September ran a good, even race to round out the trifecta. Seven Brides returned $9.00, $3.80 and $2.80. Win Won came back $3.20 and $2.40 while Come September returned 3.00 to show.
Three-year-old fillies sprinted in the Violet Stakes as Book the Devil went to the post as the heavy choice. Stumbling badly from the gate, Book the Devil never got into the race, finishing last and setting things up for another to grab the victory. The one that excelled was Gumbo Love. Trained by Clayton Pierce and ridden by Zoe Cadman, Gumbo Love rated just off the early pace and grabbed the lead in the stretch, running off to a 3½ length victory. Closing well late from near the back of the pack to finish second was She's Fantastic while Cashmere Miss closed to run third. Gumbo Love returned $8.00, $4.60 and $2.80. She's Fantastic came back $10.60 and $5.00 while Cashmere Miss returned $4.20 to show.
Milwaukee Avenue Handicap
Ten route runners went to the gate in the Milwaukee Avenue Handicap as Baker Road was primed to repeat his performance from last year's edition. Trained by Leo Gabriel Jr., Baker Road broke well and was allowed to settle in behind the early pacesetters. Ranging up to the leaders turning for home, Baker Road faced a challenge on the outside from Act Of War. Passed momentarily, Baker Road responded to the crack of the whip from jockey Eusebio Razo, Jr. and went on to a 3½ length win. In a blanket photo for second, Saquache emerged to take the place money while Happiness got up just in time for third. Baker Road returned $4.40, $3.00 and $2.60 as the only repeat winner for Illinois Champions day. Saquache came back $8.20 and $5.80 while Happiness returned $5.40 to show.
Land Of Lincoln Stakes
Thirteen starters headed to the gate for the Land Of Lincoln Stakes for three-year-old colts and geldings. The most wide-open event of the day produced the biggest prices on the card. As heavily-favored Tyler's Jewel tired to finish eleventh, it was longshot runner My Beau Mister Joe flying in the lane for the second straight winner for jockey Eusebio Razo Jr. At 16-1 odds, My Beau Mister Joe closed from the back of the pack to win by ¾ of a length. Trained by Jimmy Wiser, My Beau Mister Joe returned $35.00, $14.80 and $9.00. Also running on well in the Land Of Lincoln was field entrant Pico D J Alex. The 69-1 field shot returned $39.80 and $14.00 while pacesetter Bold America held for third, paying $4.80 to show.
Older sprinters went to the gate for the Chicagoland Handicap as a star may be in the making. The most impressive winner of the day, Classic Appeal flew by the field in the stretch on his way to a 7¼ length win. Classic Appeal was the second winner on the card for trainer Richard Hazelton and for jockey Carlos Silva. San Pedro closed well late to finish second while Medlin Road ran on for third. Classic Appeal returned $4.00, $3.00 and $2.60. San Pedro came back $10.60 and $6.60 while Medlin Road returned $3.60 to show.
