Talknow wins the Colonel Power Stakes
Favorite Talknow rallied to take the Colonel Power Stakes by one and a half lengths today at Hawthorne Racecourse. Classic Appeal was second, two and three-quarters lengths in front of Silver Bid.
"I'll tell you what. This horse has been fantastic this year. He needed a little break after that stake race (Claiming Crown Express) at Philly but it seems like it did him some good," explained winning jockey Shane Laviolette. "He raced well last time but he was even better in this race. He just sat off the pace but the track has been playing like that all day so I let him run his race. When I asked him, he just took off. He runs so effortlessly. You really don't have to use the whip. He wants to give you everything he has. He runs his heart out. He's something else."
The 5yo son of Pick Up the Phone was back of fractions of 22.22, 44.38, and 1:08.57, stopping the clock in 1:15.07 for six and one-half furlongs. He's owned by Emilio Geloso and Tom Tomillo, Jr., and trained by Tom Tomillo.
"The best thing we did was get lucky with the claim. I think that there were, like, 29 who shook for him," said trainer Tomillo. "He just keeps getting better and better. And, he's staying good. I'm most concerned that he'll back up but he hasn't shown any signs of doing that. He needed time off after that race at Philly. He had run a tough campaign all summer so I gave him the time off.
"When we brought him back he came back as good, if not better, than he did when he left. He came out of last race really good. He moved up off of it. He looked like he pulled up good in this race. We have to look for a spot to run him now.
"It looks like there might be a spot at Fair Grounds for him. It comes up in about 15 days. He's going to have a tougher time from here on out. He loses his eligibility to race in starters January 1st. I'm glad for my son and partner. They were struggling a little bit but this claim really picked them up."
Talknow paid $4.20, $3.40 and $2.20. Classic Appeal paid $8.20 and $4.00, with Silver Bid paying $2.60 to show. Man o' Rhythm, Meandmyloveman, Mr Nineball, Too Many Bucks, King Cielo, Magic Doe, and Spectacular Cat completed the order of finish.
