Julie's Prize wins Illinois Breeders Debutante
Julie's Prize rallied outside from midpack to take the Illinois Breeders Debutante by four lengths today at Hawthorne Racecourse. Invader was second, a half length in front of Cashmere Miss. Favorite She's Fantastic vied for the lead inside and then faded to fifth.
"I loved that filly going into the race," said winning jockey Larry Sterling. "I worked her a couple of times and each fraction was faster than the one before it. You don't see that very often. I though she was unbeatable in this race. I had total confidence. We came home pretty fast considering the slow fractions."
The daughter of El Prado closed into slow fractions of 24.59, 49.23, 1:15.17 and 1:42.66, stopping the clock in 1:49.66. She's owned by Richard Otto Stables, Inc. and trained by Anthony Mitchell.
Invader was further back and further outside. "She usually shows a lot of gas but Mr. Cilio (trainer Gene Cilio) told me that the inside was a little dead and speed wasn't doing too well," said jockey Chris Emigh. "So I tried to take her back to get her to relax and get her to the outside. So that's what I did. But, I didn't try to get her that far back.
"We got stuck behind a line of horses around the first turn and I had no place to go. We ended dropping way back," Emigh explained. "But, we eased to the outside and she started making up ground nice and easy. At the top of the stretch I thought we had it but she kind of started getting out on me and Sterling (jockey of winner Julie's Prize) found a hole. We both came home well, he just had a little more horse than me."
Cashmere Miss was up for third. "I really had no excuse. She tried hard," said Carlos Silva. "We had good position going into the first turn and on the backstretch. She ran her race. We were right where we wanted to be. We had no problems. She tried."
Julie's Prize paid $9.00, $4.40 and $3.40. Invader paid $7.00 and $4.80, with Cashmere Miss paying $4.40 to show. Keeping the Gold, She's Fantastic, She's the Fashion, Jet Car, Samantha B., Buttercup Express, Unsprung, Xena Peach, and Mamie Jamie completed the order of finish.
