Win Won takes the Regal Rumor Stakes
Win Won rallied strongly today to take the Regal Rumor Stakes at Hawthorne. The four-year-old daughter of Air Forbes Won was last early, but angled out and closed to catch favored O Lo, who weakened to fourth.
"She broke really well and rated perfectly behind horses," said jockey E.T. Baird. "I kept her down on the inside. When she saw daylight about the eighth pole she took off. She just kicked it into another gear and went about her business. It was a big race.
"I knew the last time that I rode her that she was something special. I love that filly. When she got pinched back in last (the $100,000 Powerless Stakes) I just took ahold of her and let her relax," Baird continued. "You saw how she finished. I think I would have won that race, not only if I hadn't gotten in trouble at the start but if things had opened up for me and I didn't have to swing so wide. Of course, hindsight is always 20/20."
Abba Gold was close up early, dropped back then rallied again for second. "I thought she ran a terrific race," said jockey Randy Meier. "They ignored her in the betting and she just narrowly got beat. It was a terrific effort. When she made her move, I thought it was the winning one."
Sharky's Review closed for third, in front of O Lo. Holy Kitten was fifth, while Sefas Rose and Feminine Fury deadheated for sixth. Capitol View and Faccia Bella were next. Soul Onarazorsedge set a pressured pace until the stretch, then faded to last.
Win Won paid $17.20, $7.80 and $5.80. Abba Gold paid $12.80 and $9.20, with Sharky's Review paying $5.40 to show.
