Kimberlite Pipe takes Carey
In the 20th running of the Grade 3, $150,000 Robert F. Carey Memorial Handicap at Hawthorne, Kimberlite Pipe was able to lead every step of the way en route to an upset victory. Trained by Michael Wright, Jr. and ridden by Chris Emigh, the six-year-old grabbed his first victory of the year, covering the mile on the turf in 1:35.94.
After covering the first quarter in 23.95 and getting the half in 47.21, Kimberlite Pipe was able to hold off Aslaaf and Major Omansky at the wire.
Jockey Chris Emigh was confident of his chances early in the race. "I broke well and got going early, but I had expected there to be others with me," he explained. "If another horse was going to fire for the lead, I had planned on dropping back, but when nobody came with me, I just kept going.
"The trainer told me that this is a horse that needs a little bit to get going, and he said he also needs some urging in the end," Emigh continued. "So when I turned for home, I hit him a couple of times to keep him alive and he just went on."
Kimberlite Pipe paid $18.20, $8.20, and $8.00. Aslaaf came back $8.00 and $7.00 while Major Omansky paid $14.20 to show.
