JOCKEY LIZ MORRIS RIDES FIRST CAREER WINNER
STICKNEY, IL -- Apprentice rider Liz Morris grabbed her first career victory in Friday's second race at Hawthorne. Morris was aboard the 15-1 longshot Z Me Zipp for trainer Don Millonas in the race and after breaking from the gate last in the field of 11, Morris and Z Me Zipp saved ground along the rail and drew off to a 3¾ length victory.
Morris, 24, took only ten rides to break through for the victory and should be on her way to bigger and better things. The 5'5" native of San Antonio plans to ride out the remainder of the meet here in Chicago and stay here through the winter.
"I had watched some tape on this horse and knew that she didn't like getting dirt in her face," stated Morris. "I was on the rail and when I broke, I planned on moving out, but there was nobody on the rail in front of me so I decided to stay there and luckily got through. I had asked Don (Millonas) a week or so ago if he had anything that I could ride for him and he asked me to breeze this one. When I worked the horse, his assistant agreed that I got along with her well and he gave me the shot."
