Illinois Derby Competitors on Hawthorne Grounds, National Pick 3, Lost Code
Derby Horses at Hawthorne
The field of ten Illinois Derby Entrants will be on the grounds by early afternoon today in preparation for Saturday's Grade 2 event. Seven of the ten have shipped in already, with two stabled at Hawthorne and only Lx Commander left to arrive this afternoon.
Morning-line favorite Alysweep is located in the stakes barn, along with Fund Of Funds, Foufa's Warrior and Cherokee's Boy. Second-choice in the morning-line, Lone Star Sky, is located in the barn of Gene Cilio. Ten Most Wanted shipped in early for the Illinois Derby, working a half over the Hawthorne strip in :49 4/5 on Tuesday morning. He is located in barn of Frank Kirby. Late supplement, Runnin' On Nitro, is in the barn of Wayne Catalano and Lx Commander will arrive to the barn of Danny Miller later today.
Illinois Derby Part of Pick 3
The Illinois Derby will be the middle leg of a National Pick 3 on Saturday that will go from one coast to the other. The Pick 3 will begin at Gulfstream Park with the Aventura Stakes. Post time on the Aventura is 4:10 CDT. The Aventura will be followed by the Illinois Derby at 4:25 CDT. The Pick 3 will be finished off by the running of the Santa Anita Derby at 4:45 CDT. Gulfstream will be the wagering hub for the Pick 3 and all races will be carried on ESPN television as part of the "Road to the Kentucky Derby" show to air from 4:00 - 5:00 CDT.
Lost Code Breeders' Cup Follows Illinois Derby
Following the running of the Illinois Derby, three-year-old sprinters will be the focus of the Lost Code Breeders' Cup Stakes. At three-quarters of a mile, the Lost Code carries a competitive field of six to compete for the $100,000 added purse.
Shipping in for the Lost Code is favored Unswept from New York. Trained by Gary Contessa, Unswept is a winner of three of six starts, most recently defeating New York-bred allowance company on February 20. Richard Migliore will be aboard Unswept on Saturday.
Coach Jimi Lee looks to be the top competition for Unswept. His biggest score came last fall in the Hoosier Juvenile. He has since finished close up in a pair of starts in Florida, including a second-place effort in the $100,000 OBS Championship on March 17. Pat Day is listed to ride Coach Jimi Lee.
The field for the Lost Code is rounded out by My Calabrese (Curt Bourque); Iceplosion (Uriel Lopez); Right Uppercut (Carlos Silva); and WW Conquistador (E.T. Baird).
