A Big Training Day, A Jockey Colony Addition, Almost Half Gone in Challenge
Tomillo Stable Has Big Day
Heading into Saturday, it appeared that the Tom Tomillo barn could be lined up for a good day as they had five entrants in the card. A couple of wins would have been nice, but Tomillo entrants popped with four winners on the card.
It started out in the opener as Hart ($10.60) ran on to a strong victory under jockey Curt Bourque. Hart was followed in the second by Tomillo trainee Embassy City ($62.80) for jockey Shane Laviolette. Bourque and Tomillo teamed up again in the fourth with Blackhawk Special ($6.60) for the win. After missing with Crafty Sandi in the fifth, Tomillo grabbed his fourth win of the day as Times Change ($7.00) grabbed the finale, giving Bourque as riding triple for the day.
Eads to Join Riding Colony
Jockey Jason Eads has moved his tack to Chicago to join a very competitive riding colony. Eads, 31, has been a top rider throughout the Midwest. He has won a pair of riding titles at Beulah Park, along with titles at Fairplex, Prairie Meadows, and most recently at Mountaineer in 2001. The 12-year veteran comes to Chicago from Mountaineer and plans to stay in Chicago throughout the year.
Eads begins riding at Hawthorne on Tuesday's card and will be represented by agent Jeff Jones.
ChiTown Challenge Update
A big kink for many came on day one of the $5,000 online ChiTown Challenge. A large amount of fans entered the contest as 1,572 signed up for the challenge. After day one, only 860 were left standing as 712 people were eliminated from the contest. Similar numbers look to be expected for Sunday's card as today's card looks to be very tough.
The Challengers who competed in the on-site challenge fared better than those on-line as 122 contestants entered. Of those entered, 41 were eliminated on day one, leaving 81 left to compete for the 125,000 Club Hawthorne points.
