Hawthorne Executive Passes
STICKNEY, IL -- Hawthorne Assistant to the President, Robert F. Carey, Jr. passed away tonight after a long battle from injuries which occurred in a fall last November.
Carey, 67, passed at his home in Riverside, IL. He is survived by his wife Peg, nine children, and 22 grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are pending.
"Bob" Carey handled all matters around the track with a hands-on approach as his primary duties were to oversee operations of the backstretch and on the track itself. Uncle Bob, as he was affectionately known by many Hawthorne employees, dealt with the horsemen on a daily basis and was also responsible for revamping Hawthorne's turf course in 1995.
