MALIZIOSA WINS SUMMERTIME PROMISE BREEDERS' CUP
"I really didn't know how good she was!"
That quote came from an excited Rene Douglas, moments after he won the $100,000 Summertime Promise Breeders' Cup Stakes at Hawthorne Race Course on Saturday aboard Maliziosa, the homebred of Haras Santa Maria de Araras.
A fast pace in this race mile and a sixteenth turf race was assured, even with the scratch of Hi Tech Honeycomb. As expected, Wasted Wisdom immediately went for the lead with Miss Spragg racing about a length off the pace. Lemon Haze stalked about a length back. That scenario continued for the first six furlongs of this mile and a sixteenth event.
Coming out of the turn, things started to change. Sarah Jade, racing well within striking distance of the early leaders, made a bold move to grab the lead. Miss Spragg gave way, Wasted Wisdom started to tire and Lemon Haze was just a half length off the lead. It was then, however, that heavy favorite Maliziosa started to roll. One problem: there was no place to go.
Douglas kept trying to get through on the inside but as soon as something opened, it closed almost immediately. Douglas was forced to go to the outside but it didn't really matter.
"I really didn't know how good she was," continued Douglas. "If I would have known she could run like that it wouldn't have bothered me to run her 10 wide. I thought I had a hole a couple of times but every time I tried to get through the hole closed on me. But, I knew that when I got her outside she was going to take off. All I had to do was show her the stick. I didn't have to hit her. She's just that good. She seemed to love the distance. She could be anything. She was very impressive."
Strikes No Spares came on at the end to grab second, finishing three-quarters of a length ahead of Sarah Jade but four lengths behind Maliziosa.
They covered the mile and a sixteenth, over a firm turf course, in 1:44.40 after fractions of 23:12, 47.03, 1:11.97, and the mile in 1:37.43.
Maliziosa paid $3.00, $2.40, $2.10; Strikes No Spares $8.40, $4.40; and Sarah Jade $3.00; $2 Exacta (7-6) $27.00; $2 Trifecta (7-6-3) $58.40; $2 Superfecta (7-6-3-1) $140.40.
