IOYA TWO TOPS NICOLE STAKES NOMINATIONS
Stickney, Illinois -- Nominations for the Nicole Stakes, Hawthorne's opening day feature, closed Saturday, April 27, with 34 nominations. The Nicole Stakes, to be run Sunday, May 5, is restricted to fillies and mares, four years old and up, at about one and one sixteenth miles on the turf. The race carries a purse of $45,000 added.
Headlining this group of nominees is Team Block's Ioya Two, trained by Chris Block. This talented racemare has visited the winner's circle 11 times in her 24 turf races. This win total, along with four places and four shows, has boosted her turf earnings to a little over $444,000. She's coming off two third place finishes in stakes, the $75,000 Stravinsky at Keeneland and the $100,000 Hillsborough at Tampa Bay in her only two starts of 2002.
Jockey Randy Meier, injured in a spill at Sportsman's on April 11, expects to be riding at Hawthorne sometime in the middle of May. "I'm feeling pretty good," said Meier. "I'm going back to the doctor on May 7th. If everything looks good then, I'll go back to working horses. I need about a week to get ready."
"I've always been a quick healer. The punctured lung hasn't been much of a problem but the busted ribs are pretty aggravating. But, they're better every day. I'm riding the bike to stay fit. I have to get back to work. I'm bored stiff and I'm driving my kids crazy."
