RIBOLETTA & ALBERT THE GREAT STEAL THE SHOW ON BREEDERS' CUP PREVIEW DAY AT BELMONT
On the busiest graded stakes weekend of the year, top contenders in major preps at Thoroughbred racing centers throughout North America and Europe were in action over the weekend with just three weeks to go before the 17th Breeders' Cup Championship at Churchill Downs on Sat., Nov. 4.
For many observers the most stunning performance of the day was the victory of RIBOLETTA over Eclipse champion BEAUTIFUL PLEASURE in the $750,000 Beldame Stakes at Belmont. Riboletta's winning time for the 1 1/8 miles fell just three-fifths of a second short of Secretariat's mark set 27 years ago.
Two races later on Belmont's outstanding 'Breeders' Cup Preview' program, 3-year-old ALBERT THE GREAT met older horses for the first time in the $1 million Jockey Club Gold Cup and came back with a six-length victory as LEMON DROP KID and BEHRENS had a bad day. Albert The Great appears a worthy rival for Kentucky Derby hero Fusaichi Pegasus in the Breeders' Cup Classic.
