WAGERING ON BELTERRA IN BREEDERS' CUP FUTURE BET SUSPENDED
Arlington Heights, Ill. (July 5, 2002) -- Wagering on Robert Manfuso's Belterra in the Breeders' Cup Distaff (Race #2) for the Breeders' Cup Future Bet has been suspended effective today, it was announced by officials of Breeders' Cup Ltd. on Friday. Belterra was #7 in the program for the Breeders' Cup Future Bet Race #2 (Distaff).
"We (Belterra) are not going to run in the Breeders' Cup this year," said trainer Carl Nafzger on Friday (July 5) morning. "We're going to rest her for 60 days and start all over."
"With the decision of the connections of Belterra to take the filly out of training, the best and required course of action is to suspend all wagering on her in the Distaff Pool," said Breeders' Cup Senior Vice President for Product Development Ken Kirchner.
"However, all bets on Belterra up to this point are still valid wagers and should be held on to through the end of the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships on October 26, 2002," added Kirchner.
In accordance with the Illinois Racing Board, the regulatory body overseeing the wager through the host track Arlington Park, rule 318.50 states --
"No refund shall be issued for Future Wager pool wagers on betting interests that do not start or finish the race. No cancellations shall be permitted once the patron has left the window. If the organization licensee is notified that a betting interest is unable to start the race and the pool is still open, the organization licensee shall immediately suspend betting on that betting interest."
The total amount wagered on Belterra was $143 at odds of 40-1 when betting was suspended.
Wagering on the three Breeders' Cup Future Bets for the Breeders' Cup Distaff as well as the Breeders' Cup Classic and Breeders' Cup Sprint continues through 7 p.m. (Eastern Time) on Sunday, July 7. Updated odds for the Breeders' Cup Future Bet are available at www.ntra.com.
