FUTURE BET WAGERING TO BE OFFERED ON ALL EIGHT BREEDERS' CUP RACES IN 2002
The National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) announced today that Breeders' Cup Future Bet wagering will be offered this year on the eight races that make up the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships, to be held Saturday, October 26 at Arlington Park in Arlington Heights, Ill.
Breeders' Cup Future Bet wagering will be conducted during four weekends in 2002 with up to three Breeders' Cup races open for betting each weekend. Under Breeders' Cup Future Bet rules, each race will offer pari-mutuel pools of 23 runners plus one field entry consisting of all horses not in the body of 23 for each respective pool. Two separate pools will be offered for the Breeders' Cup Classic, Breeders' Cup Distaff and Breeders' Cup Sprint, and one pool each will be offered for the other five Breeders' Cup races. All betting, available at outlets nationwide, will be win-only with a minimum wager amount of $2.00. Daily Racing Form will provide extensive support for the Breeders' Cup Future Bet, including full past performance lines in all editions for all days the Future Bet is offered. The Breeders' Cup Future Bet will be conducted pending approval of the Illinois Racing Board, and Arlington Park will serve as the processing hub for all wagers.
The complete Breeders' Cup Future Bet schedule for 2002 is:
"We think the Breeders' Cup Future Bet will be a very attractive wagering option for fans throughout the second half of the year and heighten the significance of divisional races that are part of the Road to the World Thoroughbred Championships," said D.G. Van Clief, Jr., president of Breeders' Cup and vice chairman of the NTRA. "If we can get people thinking about the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships earlier in the year, it will help make a big day that much bigger come October 26th and enhance the event's stature in the broader sports marketplace."
"We've tried to schedule the pool dates late enough to include European horses in the pools and to allow handicappers to develop informed opinions on the eight races, but early enough so that potentially lucrative prices can still be secured on the horses of their choice," said Ken Kirchner, senior vice president of product development for the NTRA/Breeders' Cup. "And with two separate pools offered on the Classic, Distaff and Sprint, fans will have double the opportunity to scope out their favorites in three of our most popular betting races."
In addition to offering complete past performance lines in all editions for all days the Future Bet is offered, Daily Racing Form also will provide comprehensive editorial coverage of the Future Bet horses and will conduct special seminars with DRF handicappers at selected NTRA member racetracks. "We sincerely appreciate Daily Racing Form's unprecedented commitment to the Breeders' Cup Future Bet," said Ken Kirchner. "It's clear to us that DRF's support is a vital and essential element in making this new wager a success."
It also was announced that Equibase Company will be offering racing fans a chance to track all Future Bet horses through its free Virtual Stable e-mail notification service found at ntra.com and equibase.com. A similar Virtual Stable enhancement established for this year's Triple Crown has attracted almost 10,000 new subscribers since being introduced in mid-March.
