AL'S DEARLY BRED WINS GOLDEN PHEASANT STAKES ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (Sept. 14, 2003) -- John Castro's Al's Dearly Bred picked up his second overnight stakes win of the Arlington Park meet when the son of Waquoit rallied from off the pace to get up in the final stride and take the $47,700 Golden Pheasant Stakes by a neck on Sunday at Arlington Park. Rene Douglas, Arlington's leading jockey, was aboard the Hugh Robertson-trained gelding. Run over soft turf following heavy rain overnight and earlier in the day, Al's Dearly Bred was clocked in a respectable 1:39.56 and paid $4.40, $3 and $2.20 as the race's 6-5 favorite. The Golden Pheasant was the third victory of the year for the 6-year-old who also captured the $48,150 Mister Gus Stakes over this course in May and the $40,000 John Bullit Stakes at Canterbury Park in his last trip to the post Aug. 2. He finished fifth, beaten only three lengths, in the $160,650 Sea o'Erin Breeders' Cup Mile in June. "He loves this course and always runs well in those fifties ($50,000 overnight stakes)," said Mac Robertson, Hugh Robertson's son and assistant trainer, "but in those one-fifties ($150,000 stakes races), he gets beat a couple of lengths." The winner's share of $28,620 boosted Al's Dearly Bred's career earnings to $332,904 and his lifetime record to twelve wins from 31 starts. Holy Conflict, who stalked the pace and had the lead in deep stretch, was second in the six-horse field and returned $3.60 and $2.40. It was a length and a quarter back to Mercenary who ran third and paid $2.40. Sweet Band, Sterling Gold and Take Me Up completed the order of finish.
