SHARBAYAN WINS MARATHON MAC DIARMIDA HANDICAP
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (August 30, 2003) -- Jess Miller & Iron County Farms' Sharbayan rallied from well off a slow pace to post a three-quarters of a length victory in the $45,000 Mac Diarmida Handicap on Saturday at Arlington Park. Carlos Marquez Jr. rode the son of Doyoun, who covered the "about" one mile and one-half distance over firm turf in 2:31.65.
"The horse on lead (Captain Nicholas) went 25 (seconds) the first quarter but it looked like he was running off," Marquez said. "If you go 25, you're not going to be 10 lengths in front. This horse has been running with real good horses and he has a real good kick. I waited as long as I could with him, and when I called for him, he responded."
The Mac Diarmida was the third win in as many starts this year for Sharbayan but was his first trip to the post since May 24. He earned $27,000 for the victory to elevate his bankroll to $158,837 and his overall record to five wins from 10 starts.
Roxhino, who had a brief lead in the stretch, was second. It was another head back to Act of War, who finished third. Pacesetter Captain Nicholas faded to fourth after posting fractions of 25.06, 49.74, 1:15.54, 1:41.47 and 2:07.00. Full Mandate completed the order of finish.
Sent off as the 13-10 favorite, Sharbayan paid $4.60, $2.80 and $2.20. Roxhino paid $3.40 and $2.40. Act of War paid $2.40.
