DELICATESSA SLICES WAY TO ESTRAPADE VICTORY
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (August 15, 2003) -- Barr H. Inman's Delicatessa found room along the rail in deep stretch to get up in time for a half-length victory in the $75,000 Estrapade Handicap Friday at Arlington Park. Eusebio Razo Jr. rode the Charlie Livesay-trained daughter of Dare and Go, who covered the mile and a sixteenth over yielding turf in 1:46.07.
"Charlie (trainer Livesay) told me just to try to get a piece of this," said Razo. "He knew this was a tough race but he knew that she could (win) it. The main thing was not to try to rush her. I was following Eddie Martin (Jr. jockey aboard Janiean) and at the top of the lane I tried to go outside of him but Corey Lanerie (jockey on Delmonico Cat) was there. I was hoping for the horse on the rail (Cat's Glow) to stop so I could go inside. It was almost the same scenario the last time she won."
Cat's Glow, under Brian Peck, set the pace in the race with Janeian tracking in second through three-quarters of a mile in 1:13.99. Janeian took a brief lead in the stretch but was overtaken by the winner and runner-up Delmonico Cat inside the sixteenth pole.
The Estrapade, named for the only female ever to win the Arlington Million, was the second straight victory for Delicatessa, who earned $45,000 to elevate her earnings to $167,232. Sent off at odds of more than 35-1, she returned $74.40, $20.20 and $8.20.
Delmonico Cat was second in the eight-horse lineup and paid $6 and $4.80. It was just a nose back to third-place finisher Janeian, who paid $5.40.
Flager, Cat's Glow, Oglala Sue, Sweet Deimos and Beret completed the order of finish.
