CHARACTER WITNESS WINS AWAD STAKES
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (June 8, 2003) -- Character Witness, owned and trained by Louie Roussel III, led from start to finish en route to a three-length victory in the $47,400 Awad Stakes for 3-year-olds Sunday at Arlington Park. E. T. Baird rode the gelded son of Dumaani, who covered the mile over a sloppy track in 1:36.71.
Breaking alertly from the inside, Character Witness took advantage of a ground saving trip while setting fractions of 23.17 seconds, 45.95 seconds, 1:09.75 and 1:22.85.
"He broke running," Baird said. "He was into the bridle the whole way. I was just a passenger. From the eighth pole to the wire, he just took it on home."
The Awad Stakes was the second straight win and third victory overall for Character Witness, who earned $28,440 to boost his bankroll to $55,530.
Megoman rallied from far back to run second. It was another 2 1/2 lengths back to third-place finisher Herculated. Distinguishable, Scottago and Digimon completed the order of finish in the field, which was reduced to six after the race was transferred from the turf to the main track.
Character Witness paid $15.60, $6.60 and $4. Megoman returned $5.80 and $4. Herculated, the 3-5 favorite, paid $3.
