'APT' WINNER IN DR. FAGER STAKES
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (June 7, 2003) -- Richard L. Duchossois' Apt to Be, making only his second start of the year, rallied from off the pace to win the $46,800 Dr. Fager Stakes on Saturday at Arlington Park.
Under regular rider Eusebio Razo Jr., Apt to Be was kept off the fast fractions of 22.86 seconds and 45.32 seconds set by Stormy Impact in the one-mile race. The Chris Block-trained gelding took the lead shortly past the eighth pole and drew off the win by 2 3/4 lengths in a meet's fastest time of 1:35.75.
"The race set up just the way we thought," Razo said. "Chris said if the pace was fast I should be farther back than usual with him. The horse outside of me on the backstretch (Dulce de Leche) forced me to move a little sooner than I wanted. Once he got to the lead, he was waiting for someone to come to him, but nobody did. He's been working really well and Chris had him ready to run today."
Dulce de Leche rallied from second-to-last in the stretch to finish second, a head clear of pacesetter Stormy Impact. Ole Faunty, the 8-5 betting favorite, was fourth, followed by Shah Jean and Zee Oh Six to complete the order of finish.
Apt to Be earned $28,080 to boost his bankroll to $267,497 from a record of seven wins, six seconds and four thirds from 22 starts. Second choice in the wagering at odds of 17-10, Apt to Be paid $5.40, $3.40 and $3. Dulce de Leche returned $6.80 and $3.80. Stormy Impact paid $3.40.
