OUT OF MY WAY PREVAILS IN ZEN HANDICAP
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (June 1, 2003) -- Out Of My Way prevailed after a long stretch duel with Silver Bid to prevail by a neck in the $40,000 Zen Handicap at Arlington Park on Sunday. The Gene Cilio-trained son of Jolie's Halo was ridden by Arlington's leading reinsman Curt Bourque and covered the seven furlongs over a fast track in 1:22.57.
The 6-year-old gelding was hustled toward the front in the backstretch while maintaining a ground-saving trip along the rail just off the pace set by Tic N Tin who raced a quarter mile in 22.67 seconds and a half-mile in 45.34 seconds.
Silver Bid, racing three-wide, engaged the leaders on the second turn and put a head in front approaching the top of the stretch and again at the eighth pole. Out of My Way, however, responded under strong urging by Bourque to gain the slight victory.
Out of My Way, who races in the colors of Peter Cappas, Founders Group and Crown's Way Farm, earned $24,000 to boost his bankroll to $239,371 from a record of six wins in 22 starts. He paid $14, $8.60 and $5.60.
Silver Bid was a clear second and paid $15.40 and $7.20. San Pedro was another three lengths back in third and returned $4.
Medlin Road, favored Classic Appeal, Saquache, Tic N Tin and Baker Road completed the order of finish.
