DANCING WITH ME DANCES TO RELUCTANT GUEST HANDICAP VICTORY
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (May 24, 2003) -- Saddle cloth number 13 proved to lucky for the connections of Ted Taylor's Dancing With Me. The daughter of Mt. Livermore drew in from the also eligible list after the scratch of Kate the Great to get a berth in the 12-horse starting field for the $43,200 Reluctant Guest Handicap at Arlington Park and prevailed by a neck over Soccory in the one mile turf race in 1:37.99.
The Reluctant Guest was the first stakes victory for trainer Rebecca Maker and the first for jockey Randall Meier since returning from injury earlier this year.
"She's a really nice filly," Maker said. "I've always thought highly of her and I wouldn't have entered here if I didn't think she had a real chance. Her best distance is a mile so I'll probably look for something else at a flat mile for her."
"Rebecca said this filly can be a little rank but she settled really nicely for me," Meier said. "I didn't really ask her to run until the eighth pole. She tugged me up there along side of Ray's filly (Soccory) and then I let her put them away."
Sent off at odds of more than 32-1, Dancing With Me returned $67.20, $26.40 and $14.60. She earned $24,000 for the win, her third in 11 trips to the post, to boost her earnings to $87,717.
Illinois-bred Soccory, a 29-1 longshot, ran second and paid $23.40 and $12.00. It was another two lengths back to third-place finisher Attico, who paid $4.60. Voodoo Lady, Kabylia, Ellie's Rose, Salty Farma, Sound of Gold, Cottage Rose, Barney's Mistress, I Can Fan Fan and One Fine Shweetie completed the order of finish.
