SOFTLY SWING SWEETEST IN ARLINGTON HOLIDAY STAKES ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (Oct. 14, 2002) -- Softly proved best of all in the $48,500 Sweetest Chant Stakes with a neck score in the mile and an eighth Columbus Day holiday feature at the suburban Chicago oval. Eusebio Razo Jr. rode the Carl Nafzger-trained daughter of Binalong who covered the distance over a fast track in 1:52.49. The Sweetest Chant was the first win since May for the 4-year-old filly and fifth in 10 starts this year. The $31,100 winner's check boosted her bankroll to $188,151 for his owner-breeder Jim Tafel of Barrington, Ill. Never more than two lengths off the lead while racing four wide, Softly rallied in the stretch and prevailed in the final yards. The 6-5 favorite, she paid $4.60, $3 and $2.40. Giving Noreen, also close up early, had a brief lead in the stretch but failed to last. She paid $4.40 and $2.80. It was another neck back to Sharky's Review, who finished third and paid $2.60. Becky Virtue, Magic Motel, Pretty Gale and McKinney completed the order of finish. - END - |
