AL'S DEARLY BRED WINS GOLDEN PHEASANT HANDICAP
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (September 8, 2002) -- John Castro's Al's Dearly Bred took the lead in the vicinity of the sixteenth pole and held off the late challenge of Smilin' Slew to win the $45,360 Golden Pheasant Handicap Sunday at Arlington Park.
The gelded son of Waquoit covered the mile over a firm turf in a season's best time of 1:35.13 and paid $22.60, $9.20 and $6.40. Recent Arlington arrival Seth Martinez was in the saddle aboard the Hugh Robertson-trained 5-year-old. The winner's share of $25,200 boosted his bankroll to $207,960 from a record of nine wins, two seconds and four thirds in 23 starts.
Three-wide for most of the race, Al's Dearly Bred was about six lengths off the pace set by 46-1 longshot Man o' Rhythm, rallied to the front in the stretch and gamely held off Smilin' Slew to earn the victory.
Smilin' Slew saved ground while racing in sixth position for more than three-quarters of a mile, rallied along the rail in the stretch but was unable to get to the winner. It was another three-quarters of a length back to Apt to Be, who finished third in the 10-horse field. Smilin' Slew returned $11.60 and $8. Apt to Be paid $6.20.
Purplest, Just Like Jimmy, Galic Boy, Man o' Rhythm, Summerzene, Monarch's Maze and Cappuchino completed the order of finish.
