(August 25, 2002) -- Willow Ridge Farm's De Elegant Oscar overcame a rough start to get up in the final stride and win the $50,000 Windy City Dash for American Quarter Horses by a head Sunday at Arlington Park. The 5-year-old son of Lucks Gay Olene was ridden by Matt Casebolt and covered the 400 yards in track-record time of 19.71 seconds. The previous standard of 19.84 seconds was set by Streaking Ray in the 1997 edition of the Windy City Dash. The Joe Blackburn trainee, who paid $65.60, $28.40 and $11.00, earned $30,000 to boost his bankroll to $87,304 from a record of six wins, one second and three thirds in 19 starts. "At the break, the six horse (Casa de Royality) took us out about three paths," said Casebolt, who was riding De Elegant Oscar for the first time in the Windy City Dash. "I had to ride him pretty hard but he finished strong." "His form isn't the truest in the world," added trainer Blackburn, "but when he's on top of his game, he can beat good horses." Kates Driver led every jump but the last to finish second in the 10-horse field and paid $5.80 and $4.00. It was another half-length back to A Run Run Runaway who finished third and returned $7.00. Heza Contender, Special Hippity Hop, Casa de Royalty, Solid Gold Bullion, Quick to Flare Uo, Can U Fly and Dial Ninety Six completed the order of finish. - END - |
