BONAPAW WINS GRADE III HANSHIN CUP
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (July 20, 2002) -- Bonapaw, who races in the colors of twin brothers Jimmy & Dennis Richard, used his sprinting ability to his advantage when stretched out to win Grade III $100,000 Hanshin Cup at one mile in 1:34.00, the fastest time at the distance at Arlington Park since the track reopened in 2000.
Gerard Melancon rode the Norman Miller III-trained son of Sabona who earned $60,000 to boost his lifetime earnings to $791,636. The win was his fifteenth in 32 trips to the post and his third in five starts this year.
Bonapaw was sent right to the lead by Melancon, who kept his mount off the rail and was able to get him to relax through an opening quarter mile of 23.03 seconds. He picked the pace up considerably with a half-mile split of 45.31 seconds, three-quarters of a mile in 1:09 and seven furlongs in 1:21.17. Challenged by Slider and Hero's Tribute at the top of the stretch, Bonapaw responded to draw off for a 2¼-length victory.
"He was happy all the way around," said Melancon, who was in from Louisiana to ride Bonapaw. "I knew if I could keep him happy and relaxed, they weren't going to beat him. I thought I was in the best spot the whole way."
Slider, who may have gotten a nose in front in upper stretch, was clear second, a length ahead of Discreet Hero, who was third in the seven-horse field. Hero's Tribute, Mercenary, favored Binthebest and X Country completed the order of finish.
"I thought he would win when he turned for home," said Rene Douglas, who rode the runner-up. "I went inside perfect. It looked like he was going to win. He hesitated a little bit at the end. It is great to win five in a row so far today. It's a really good day."
Bonapaw paid $12.60, $6.40 and $5.80. Slider paid $5.20 and $4.60. Discreet Hero paid $6.00.
