TALKNOW WINS DR. FAGER HANDICAP
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (June 30, 2002) -- Tom Tomillo Jr. and Emilio Geloso's Talknow, claimed for $5,000 last October, was all out to win the $42,000 Dr. Fager Handicap by a head Sunday at Arlington Park. Apprentice jockey Elvis Trujillo was aboard the son of Pick Up The Phone who covered the seven furlongs in a meet-best time of 1:21.80.
"This guy just keeps getting better and better," said trainer Tom Tomillo Sr., who won a 29-way shake to get the horse last fall. "I may try to take him East for the Claiming Crown (Philadelphia Park in August). He met some pretty tough horses today, and he'd meet some tough competition back East, so I'll see what it looks like first, but he keeps meeting every challenge I give him."
Since being claimed, the now 5-year-old gelding has started 11 times with eight wins and three seconds. He earned $25,200 for the Dr. Fager victory to boost his lifetime bankroll to $188,460.
Michigan invader Secret Romeo closed stoutly along the rail to finish second. Chindi was third in the eight-horse field, followed by Silver Zipper, Tic N Tin, Spectacular Cat, Proven Cure and Miners Gamble.
Talknow, second choice in the wagering, paid $6.20, $3.80 and $2.40. Secret Romeo returned $5.00 and $2.60. Chindi paid $2.40.
