GUANA WINS FLAWLESSLY STAKES
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (June 9, 2002) -- Van Meter, Hendrickson & Lowenbaum's Guana, a French-bred daughter of Sillery, made a three-wide move on the final turn en route to a 4¼-length victory in the $47,100 Flawlessly Stakes Sunday at Arlington Park. Shane Laviolette was aboard the Elliott Walden-trained 3-year-old filly who covered the "about" 1 1/16 miles over "good" turf in 1:45.66.
"This filly likes to sit in the middle of the pack," said Laviolette when asked if he was concerned about pacesetter Behind The Bluff who was on the lead after a half mile in 47.70 seconds. "I just wanted to make sure she broke well and to get her to relax. She was bouncing a little bit in the post parade from the crowd noise, so I tried to keep her away from the grandstand. When it was time to run, I let her out."
The victory, her second in three starts since being sent to this country for her sophomore campaign and third win in six starts overall, was worth $28,260 and boosted her career earnings to $70,009.
Haylie's Dawn, last after the opening half mile, rallied strongly to finish second but was no match for the winner. Strikes No Spares closed from next-to-last in the seven-horse field to finish third. Favored Lost At Sea, Going Great Guns, Behind the Bluff and Zaffrani completed the order of finish.
Guana, second choice in the betting at odds of 2-1, paid $6.60, $3.80 and $3.20. Haylie's Dawn returned $7.80 and $5.20. Strikes No Spares paid $4.40.
