RENE DOUGLAS WINS FIRST FIVE ON ARLINGTON THURSDAY CARD
Leading Reinsman Adds Two More Later to Make Seven for the Day
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (July 24, 2003) -- Rene Douglas, Arlington's leading jockey, won the first five races on Arlington Park's nine-race card Thursday, July 24, and a total of seven victories from nine mounts on the program.
Douglas' streak actually began with the final race on the Wednesday program when the 36-year-old reinsman guided Somethingdangerous ($8.00) to victory, his third on that card and meet leading 68th win entering Thursday's races.
The Panamanian-born rider then rattled off scores in the first five races Thursday, taking the opener aboard Stormy Rosa ($5.20), the second with Excellabet ($7), the third astride Uncontrollable ($6.20), the fourth on Quest For Truth ($4.20) and the fifth with Willow Cove ($7.40).
The skein came to a close when his sixth-race mount, One More Moondance, finished fifth, but he quickly rebounded to take the next two races; winning the seventh with Red Mimi ($3.20) and the eighth on Chirimoya ($3.80). His ninth-race mount, Marnita, finished third.
Douglas, who now has 75 wins at the meet, leads his closest pursuer Eusebio Razo Jr. by 27 victories. Douglas won five races on July 19. Last year, Douglas won the first five races on the Saturday, July 20 card.
The track's all-time record is eight wins from nine mounts on a single program, recorded by Pat Day on September 13, 1989.
Arlington Park opened its 104-day 2003 meet on Friday, May 9 and will race through Saturday, Sept. 27. Arlington Park, whose parent company is Churchill Downs Incorporated (Nasdaq: CHDN), also operates seven off-track, simulcast-wagering facilities: Trackside Arlington Park (Arlington Heights), Trackside Quad City Downs (East Moline), Trackside Chicago, Trackside McHenry, Trackside Rockford, Trackside Waukegan and Longshots Bar & Grill featuring Trackside OTB in South Elgin.
