AUG. 16 ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (June 9, 2003) -- Ipe Tombe, the South African champion who defeated males in the Grade I Dubai Duty Free at Nad al Sheba March 29, is joined by Golden Apples, last year's Beverly D. victress, to head a list of 76 world-class fillies and mares nominated to the 2003 Grade I Beverly D. at Arlington Park. The 14th running of the Beverly D., contested at a mile and three-sixteenths over Arlington's world-famous grass course, is the sister race to the Grade I Arlington Million, signature race of Chicago's premier Thoroughbred oval. Both events will be run Aug. 16 along with the Grade I Secretariat as part of Arlington's one-day International Festival of Racing. The three internationally renowned events are the only Grade I races offered in Illinois. Now owned by Team Valor, WinStar Farm & Sunmark Partners, Ipe Tombe is to be trained by Elliott Walden during her American racing career although she has not yet started in the United States. Her last trip to the post was her three-length winning effort in the Dubai Duty Free on Dubai World Cup Day. The Dubai Duty Free was her third straight stakes win at the Nad al Sheba course this year. Last season, Ipe Tombe concluded her 2002 campaign with a win in the Grade I Vodacom Durban July Handicap, South Africa's premier race run at Greyville. Ipe Tombe, a phrase in Zulu which translates to "where are the girls," has now won her last seven straight, with the three Dubai wins added on to four straight in South Africa. However, it is Golden Apples, owned by Gary Tanaka, who is the reigning queen in Arlington's Beverly D. The Irish-bred mare has not started this season but concluded her 2002 campaign when second by a head in Hollywood's Grade I Matriarch Dec. 1. Previously she had finished fourth, beaten only two lengths by the winner in the Grade I Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Arlington Park Oct. 26. Following her Beverly D. score last summer, Golden Apples returned to her Southern California base to win the Grade I Yellow Ribbon at Santa Anita Oct. 5 before coming back to Arlington and Chicago for her Breeders' Cup Day engagement. Godolphin Racing Inc.'s Hi Dubai, a British-bred sophomore filly who was second by a length in her last start in the Group I Prix Saint-Alary at Longchamp May 18, is another prominent international nominee to the 2003 Beverly D. Nancy A. Vanier & Lyda Williamson's Beret, a length and a half-winner in an allowance race at one mile June 6 at Arlington, is among the local Beverly D. nominees. - END - |
