Arlington Park Selects Bonny Brown as New Track Bugler
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (May 10, 2003) -- After a month-long search that scoured the city and the suburbs, Arlington Park race track has announced the selection of Bonny Brown as the new track bugler. Brown bested six finalists in the "Battle of the Buglers" held in Arlington Park's winner's circle on Saturday, May 10, and will replace venerable hornman Joe Kelly who served in this position for 22 years.
A "Passing of the Bugle" ceremony from Kelly to Brown is scheduled at the racetrack between races on Sunday, May 11.
Bonny Brown, 29, is a professional musician from Aurora who graduated with a degree in music from De Paul University in 1995. Brown plays in several symphonies and bands including the Southwest Symphony, Big Fun, Park Avenue and has her own band Rhumbuzzz.
"I am thrilled with the selection of Bonny as my replacement," said Kelly. "She is an outstanding bugler with tremendous musical flair. I am confident she will have a successful career as at Arlington and as a goodwill ambassador for the track."
Eighteen aspiring buglers representing a variety of ages and occupations participated in the open auditions held last month at the Metropolis Centre for the Performing Arts in Arlington Heights and Chicago's Big House American Bistro. Occupations of the contestants ranged from professional musicians to a computer engineer, a naval reservist and high school and college students.
Arlington Park is one of the few racetracks to utilize a live bugler when calling the horses to the post. Track bugler must be at least 18 years of age and be available to play between the races every Saturday, Sunday and holidays throughout the track season which ends September 27.
