SOUTH ELGIN, Ill. (Dec. 2, 2002) -- One of South Elgin's hottest nightspots is about to become the home of the northwest suburbs newest off-track wagering facility when The Otherside at Sammy's is re-christened "Longshots Bar & Grill featuring Trackside OTB" at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002.
South Elgin Mayor James W. Hansen II will cut the ribbon and place the ceremonial first wager at Illinois' sixth Trackside OTB, the name given to all off-track wagering locations operated by Arlington Park and its parent company, Churchill Downs Incorporated ("CDI"), and the only Illinois Trackside housed in an existing restaurant.
"Adding the off-track wagering element to an existing restaurant, sports bar or entertainment facility is the model for the future of Trackside OTBs in Illinois," explained Arlington Park President Steve Sexton. "It provides an additional activity that will drive traffic and revenues to existing establishments and communities, while giving us another way to attract new fans to the excitement of horse racing."
Guests in attendance at the grand opening will be treated to a free pizza and cold buffet from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. and receive an Arlington Park T-shirt. Entertainment will continue with live music from the bands Revo and Bello beginning at 10 p.m.
Located at 335 N. McLean Blvd., Longshots will offer wagering day and night seven days a week on races from Churchill Downs Simulcast Network ("CDSN") tracks and other major racetracks throughout North America and the world. More than 40 video monitors are located throughout the facility -- including two 50-inch screens. There will be seven self-service machines to accept wagers.
As part of the changeover from Sammy's to Longshots, additional lighting has been installed in the re-paved parking lot, additional landscaping is in place and the entire facility has been refurbished and remodeled to provide the maximum in convenience and comfort for both the OTB patron as well as those in attendance for the live music.
