GARCIA QUALIFIES FOR NTRA/DRF NATIONAL HANDICAPPING CHAMPIONSHIP
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Sept. 13, 2002) -- The Twin Spires Club, the player-rewards program at Churchill Downs Incorporated ("CDI"), crowned its first qualifier this week for the $200,000 DRF/NTRA National Handicapping Championship. Ralph Garcia of Chicago, Ill. was flawless with his handicapping Sunday, scoring a perfect 20 points to win the first of eight Twin Spires Club National Handicapping Championship qualifiers. Garcia, who entered the contest at Trackside Chicago, has secured a spot in the NTRA/DRF National Handicapping Championships this January in Las Vegas.
Garcia collected $1,000 as the week's national qualifier as well as $150 for winning the local contest at CDI's Trackside Chicago. Garcia bested 890 other players across 12 participating Twin Spires Club locations throughout Florida, Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky.
"It was a great day," said Garcia. "I started a $5 parlay with four races in the contest and I can't believe I hit that too! It paid over $6,000. I used the races from the contest and also hit a couple pick three bets. I was a $12,000-plus winner that day."
Garcia has qualified for the NTRA/DRF National Handicapping Championship the last two years through contests at Arlington Park.
"I have been before and I am ready to win it all this year," he said.
Twin Spires Club members still have seven more opportunities to qualify for the NTRA/DRF National Handicapping Championship. There are three additional qualifiers remaining in September (Sept. 15, 22, and 29) and four in December (Dec. 1, 8, 15, 22).
