CARLOS SILVA EARNS 3,000TH VICTORY
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (July 31, 2002) -- Jockey Carlos Silva became the 101st rider to win 3,000 races when he guided Cutshall Racing LLC's Buba's Caper to a neck victory in Wednesday's 3rd race at Arlington Park.
"I'm so glad I did this here at Arlington, it's such a beautiful place," Silva said. "I have so many people to thank that I can't remember them all. I want to thank all the trainers and owners that I have ridden for, all the jockeys I have ridden with and most of all my family."
Before receiving a Loricrone mantle clock to commemorate the occasion from Arlington chairman Richard L. Duchossois, Silva was joined in the winner's circle by his family, friends, fellow riders and Arlington President Steve Sexton, Senior Vice President Bill Thayer and Vice President of Racing and Operations Frank Gabriel Jr.
Silva and his fellow riders were given special "Silva 3,000 Wins" baseball caps by trainer Janice Ely and Patti Miller, wife of trainer Danny Miller. Buba's Caper is trained by Ely.
Breaking from the rail in the six-horse field, Buba's Caper battled for the lead in the mile and an eighth race with Twilight Aurora for three-quarters of a mile and held off a late challenge from Tay Laur to record the milestone victory.
The 46-year-old reinsman has been riding in the United States since 1978. Though he was never won a riding title here, he is currently fifth on the list of Arlington's all-time leading riders with 923 victories.
Arlington Park, the Chicago area's premier Thoroughbred racetrack located in Arlington Heights, Ill., is running a 107-day meet in 2002 from Wednesday, June 5 to Sunday, Oct. 27.
