ARLINGTON PARK BELMONT DAY HANDLE TOPS SINCE 1996
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (June 8, 2002) -- Total handle on Arlington's 10-race live card, which included the 2002 Belmont Stakes as a special event, was the highest in Illinois since 1996, the last year that records are available. In addition, both the on-track and total handles on the 12-race simulcast card from Belmont were the highest in the last seven years.
Total commingled handle on Arlington's races on Belmont Day was $4,291,120. The previous high was $4,127,785 in 1996 when jockey Rene Douglas won the Belmont on Editor's Note.
On the 12 Belmont Park races, Arlington Park fans on track wagered $714,150, nearly double the $375,248 bet in 1997 when Silver Charm fell three-quarters of a length short of a Triple Crown in a loss to Touch Gold. In addition, Saturday's $3,788,085 total handle in Illinois on the Belmont card was more than $1.4 million higher than the $2,359,158 wagered statewide in Charismatic's 1999 failed attempt to sweep the classic races when the Illinois host for the Belmont was the National Jockey Club at Hawthorne.
In Illinois, the Trifecta paid significantly higher than New York's payoff of $25,209 with one $1 winning ticket, purchased at the State Street OTB, worth $68,085.
Following are the Illinois prices for the 2002 Belmont Stakes.
