(847) 385-7500 ext. 7319 20TH RENEWAL OF GRADE I ARLINGTON MILLION GETS 114 NOMINATIONS ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (May 29, 2002) -- Beat Hollow, With Anticipation, Hap, and White Heart, the first four finishers in the Grade I Woodford Reserve Turf Classic Stakes at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derby Day, May 4, head the American-based contingent of 114 nominees to this summer's Grade I Arlington Million. Also included among the original nominations to the internationally renowned Arlington Million in 2002 are European-based standouts Rock of Gibraltar, Century City, Della Francesca and Foreign Accent, appropriately the first four finishers in the Group I Entenmann's Irish 2000 Guineas at The Curragh in Ireland last Saturday. As the traditional signature race of the Arlington Park season, Arlington Million XX, for 3-year-olds and upward, will be contested August 17 over Arlington's world famous turf course at a mile and a quarter. The Arlington Million is also the fifth leg of the World Series Racing Championship (WSRC) - a 14-race series contested on four continents. This year, the series will return to Arlington Park October 26 for the Grade I John Deere Breeders' Cup Turf and Grade I Breeders' Cup Classic as part of the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships. It will be the first time in history that any single racecourse will host three legs of the WSRC in the same year. British-bred Beat Hollow, owned by Juddmonte Farms Inc., came from just off the pace to win the Group I Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamp last season. The bay used similar tactics in the Woodford Reserve earlier this month when finishing a length and a quarter in front of Augustin Stable's With Anticipation. Allen E. Paulson's Hap, runner-up in last year's Arlington Million, finished third in this year's Woodford Reserve, a head behind With Anticipation but three-quarters of a length to the good of Gainesborough Farm Inc.'s White Heart. That gelding, also British-bred, won the 2001 Woodford Reserve. Irish-bred Rock of Gibraltar, owned by Sir Alex Ferguson, won Saturday's Irish 2000 Guineas by a length and a half. On May 4 the Danehill colt had taken the Group I Sagitta 2000 Guineas Stakes at Newmarket. He is the first horse to complete the English-Irish Guineas double in a decade. Rock of Gibraltar, runner-up Century City, owned by Mrs. John Magnier, and third-place finisher Della Francesca, owned by Michael Tabor, are all trained by Aidan O'Brien. Foreign Accent, fourth in Saturday's Irish race, is owned by Manton Racing Partnership and trained by John Gosden. Another American-based nominee to this year's Million is Sam-Son Farm's Strut the Stage, winner of the Grade II Dixie Handicap at Pimlico in Baltimore on Preakness Day, May 18. Strut the Stage was second by a nose in the Grade I Secretariat last season to Allen E. Paulson Living Trust's Startac, who is also among this year's Million nominees. The 2002 Secretariat Stakes, restricted to 3-year-olds at a mile and a quarter on the grass, will be observing its 26th renewal on Arlington Million Day. Along with the 13th running of the Grade I Beverly D., for fillies and mares at a mile and three-sixteenths on the turf, Chicago's three showcase races make up the one-day International Festival of Racing August 17. Also among the European-based nominees to Arlington Million XX are Padua Stables & Mrs. John Magnier's Bach, second in Sunday's Group I Tattersalls Gold Cup at The Curragh and third in last season's Grade I Breeders' Cup Mile at Belmont Park. Gary A. Tanaka's Caitano, fourth in last year's Arlington Million, is nominated again this year. Luiz A. Taunay's Redattore, the Brazilian-bred who was third in last year's Arlington Million and is a nominee once again this summer, finished second in the Grade I Shoemaker Breeders' Cup Mile Stakes at Hollywood Park on Memorial Day. Million nominee Quiet Resolve, the Canadian-based gelding owned by Sam-Son Farm who finished 10th in last season's renewal, won the Grade III Connaught Cup Stakes at Woodbine Race Course last Saturday. Million nominee Forbidden Apple, owned by Arthur I. Appleton, finished second in the Breeders' Cup Mile last season. Arlington Park, the Chicago area's premier Thoroughbred racetrack located in Arlington Heights, Ill., will run a 107-day meet in 2002 from Wednesday, June 5 to Sunday, Oct. 27. Arlington Park, which merged with Churchill Downs Incorporated (Nasdaq: CHDN) in September 2000, also operates five off-track, simulcast-wagering facilities -- "Trackside" Arlington Park (Arlington Heights), Quad City Downs (East Moline), Chicago, Rockford and Waukegan.
