(847) 385-7754 ARLINGTON SCHEDULES 38 STAKES WITH $6.3 MILLION IN PURSES FOR 2002 Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships "Preview Weekend at the Park," 7 New Stakes Added ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (Jan. 21, 2002) -- Arlington Park announced Monday that it will submit an expanded stakes schedule with 38 stakes worth $6.3 million to the Illinois Racing Board for approval at their Feb. 12, 2002 meeting. Arlington's 2002 stakes program includes seven new stakes surrounding the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships and an increase of $750,000 from the 2001 schedule. Arlington Park, who will host the 2002 Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships on Saturday Oct. 26, will run a 107-day meet from Wednesday, June 5 to Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002. Among the highlights of this year's schedule is the new "Preview Weekend at the Park" on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 28 and 29 featuring four prep races for the 2002 World Thoroughbred Championships. On Saturday, the $150,000 Arlington-Washington Futurity (Grade III) and the $100,000 Arlington-Washington Lassie (GIII) will both be contested at a mile for two-year-old colts and fillies, respectively. The next day features the $400,000 Washington Park Handicap (GII) for three-year-olds and up at a mile and three-sixteenths for Breeders' Cup Classic hopefuls and the $150,000-added Sea O'Erin Breeders' Cup Mile, with a purse increase of $50,000 from a year ago, for turf specialists three-years-old and up. Last year's Washington Park was run July 21 at a mile and a quarter. "For the third consecutive year, Arlington has created a new major event on the racing calendar with the 'Preview Weekend at the Park' on Sept. 28 and 29," said Frank Gabriel, Arlington's vice president of racing and operations referring to Million Preview Day in 2001 and the Prairie State Festival in 2000. "Serving as host for this year's Breeders' Cup Thoroughbred World Championships will focus greater attention on our stakes schedule and promises to provide our fans with some very exciting racing at Arlington Park in 2002." In addition, seven new $100,000 stakes have been added to the Friday through Sunday schedule surrounding the Breeders' Cup. On Friday, the seven-furlong Gilded Time Stakes for two-year-olds and the John Henry Handicap for older horses to be run at a mile and 3/16 on the turf will help kickoff the championship weekend. Also, the second running of the $100,000 Estrapade Handicap for fillies and mares three and up at a mile and a sixteenth on turf will be part of the Friday card. On Breeders' Cup Day, in addition to the eight World Thoroughbred Championships races, Arlington Park will host an 11-race card with three additional stakes for older horses. The "Right Here Right Now" Safely Kept Handicap for fillies and mares, three-year-olds and up to be contested at seven furlongs, the Black Tie Affair Handicap sponsored by The State of Illinois for three-year-olds and up to be run at a mile and an eighth plus the mile and a sixteenth Steinlen Handicap for three-year-olds and up on the turf. The weekend and the Arlington 2002 race meet conclude on Sunday, Oct. 27 with the Eliza Stakes for two-year-old fillies at seven furlongs and the Smile Handicap for older horses at five and a half furlongs on the turf. Arlington's International Festival of Racing, featuring Illinois' only three Grade I stakes, all scheduled for turf -- the $1,000,000 Arlington Million for three-year-olds and up, the $700,000 Beverly D. for fillies and mares three and up, and the $400,000 Secretariat Stakes for three-year-olds -- will be Saturday, Aug. 17. In 2001, Arlington Park introduced "Million Preview Day," featuring the Arlington Handicap, the Modesty Handicap and Round Table Stakes, which returns in 2002 on Saturday, July 27. Also returning is the third annual Prairie State Festival with six stakes for Illinois-breds and purses totaling $450,000, on Saturday, June 22.
