GRADE I BEVERLY D. ATTRACTS 91 FILLY & MARE NOMINATIONS

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (May 31, 2002) -- England's Legend, the defending champion in Arlington Park's Grade I Beverly D., and the brilliant but pedi-precarious Astra, who failed as the odds-on choice in that same test last summer, top a group of 91 fillies and mares nominated to the 2002 renewal of the local showcase event that annually attracts its share of the world's most prominent female Thoroughbred turf stars.

The 13th renewal of the $700,000 Beverly D., run at a mile and three-sixteenths over Arlington's world famous grass course, will be contested on August 17 as part of Arlington's International Festival of Racing. The Grade I Arlington Million, centerpiece of the Chicago Thoroughbred racing season, and the Grade I Secretariat, final event of Arlington's Mid-America Triple, are also part of the one-day Festival.

In last year's Beverly D., England's Legend, owned by Eduoard de Rothschild, took command shortly after the start, quickly increased the margin while making the pace and drew off a second time in the late stages to tally by seven and three-quarter lengths at the wire. The British-bred then went to New York for the Grade I Flower Bowl and finished second, beaten three-quarters of a length. She concluded her campaign with a disappointing 11th-place finish in the Grade I Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Belmont Park on October 27 after making the pace for the first six furlongs. The 5-year-old mare has not started this season.

Astra, who had captured Santa Anita's Grade II Santa Barbara Handicap and Hollywood's Grade I Beverly Hills Handicap prior to the 2001 Beverly D., was prominent for a half as the choice of the fans at the local oval last summer before tiring suddenly in the run down the backstretch. However, the daughter of Theatrical has returned to her winning ways this season, most recently with a head score in Hollywood's Grade I Gamely Breeders' Cup Handicap on May 27 after tallying by two in this season's Santa Barbara April 20. She finished third, beaten three and three-quarters, in Santa Anita's Grade II Santa Ana Handicap March 23 in her first start since last year's Beverly D.

Starine, a Beverly D. nominee owned and trained by Hall of Fame conditioner Bobby Frankel, finished second, beaten a head by Astra in the Gamely on Memorial Day at Hollywood as the strong second choice in the wagering. Taken in hand and placed just off the pace, the 5-year-old gray mare was forced to steady approaching the lane, took clear command in mid-stretch despite racing wide and then just failed to withstand Astra at the wire.

Bred in France, Starine came to the United States in the spring last year and won two races at Saratoga during the summer, including a tally in the Grade II Diana Handicap on September 3. The daughter of Mendocino pressed the pace of England's Legend in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf before tiring to finish 10th. She bounced back from that defeat to win Hollywood's Grade I Matriarch Stakes November 25 and was second in the Santa Ana in her first start this season.

However, Frankel has a German-bred 4-year-old filly nominated to the Beverly D. that campaigned exclusively in Europe last year. Gary A. Tanaka's Peu a Peu made the first six starts of her career in Germany, with wins in two minor stakes, before finishing seventh in the Group I Prix de l'Opera at Longchamp October 7 in the final start of her sophomore campaign. Since coming under Frankel's tutelage, Peu a Peu made her first start in the United States a winning one on May 18, when she captured the Grade III Yerba Buena Breeders' Cup Handicap at Bay Meadows. The bay defeated the favored Janet, a British-bred Beverly D. nominee owned by Red Baron's Barn LLC, by two lengths in the Yerba Buena.

Tanaka's Polaire, an Irish-bred who finished fifth in last season's Grade III Modesty, is another Beverly D. nominee. Polaire, who set the pace in the Yerba Buena before weakening to finish fourth, was third in the Santa Barbara in her previous start.

The winner of last year's Modesty, traditionally the final local prep for the Beverly D., was Team Block's Ioya Two, an Illinois-bred Chicago favorite who is nominated to this season's Beverly D. Last summer, the Block family resisted the temptation to pay a supplementary Beverly D. nomination fee despite her Modesty score.

Other American-based Beverly D. nominees include Bentley Smith Revocable Trust's Solvig, third in the Grade III Early Times Mint Julep May 18, fourth in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf and fifth in last year's Beverly D. Also, Green Hills Farm Inc.'s Voodoo Dancer, third in the Gamely but the victress in Aqueduct's Beaugay Handicap May 5 as well as Acclaimed Racing Stable's Jennasietta, winner of the Calder Breeders' Cup Handicap May 25.

Other European-based fillies and mares nominated to the Beverly D. are the Wertheimer & Frere-owned pair of Chanteline and Ice Bride. Both those fillies are trained by Criquette Head-Maarek, who saddled Maktoum Al Makktoum's Hatoof to win the 1994 Beverly D. Zaza Top, another Beverly D. nominee, is a German-bred filly owned by Stiftung Gestut Fahrhof and trained by Andreas Wohler. That combination won last year's Arlington Million with Silvano.

Arlington Park, the Chicago area's premier Thoroughbred racetrack located in Arlington Heights, Ill., will run a 107-day meet in 2002 from Wednesday, June 5 to Sunday, Oct. 27. Arlington Park, which merged with Churchill Downs Incorporated (Nasdaq: CHDN) in September 2000, also operates five off-track, simulcast-wagering facilities -- "Trackside" Arlington Park (Arlington Heights), Quad City Downs (East Moline), Chicago, Rockford and Waukegan.
