'GOOD NEWS' MEETS 'AT MIDNITE' IN SINGAPORE OAKS
Sophomore Fillies Face-Off Over Nine Furlongs
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (Aug. 7, 2003) -- CresRan LLC's Sue's Good News and B M H Stable's Meet Me At Midnite will likely battle for the public's support as they headline a field of nine 3-year-old fillies in Saturday's $100,000 Singapore Plate at Arlington Park. The Grade III race, known for much of its history as the Arlington Oaks, will be run at a mile and an eighth and will be the eighth race on a 10-race card.
A daughter of Woodman, Sue's Good News won the first four races of her career including the $75,000 Instant Racing Breeders' Cup at Oaklawn Park before seeing that skein snapped when she ran sixth in the Grade III Delaware Oaks at that Midlantic oval. Trainer Steve Hobby indicated that Sue's Good News tied up sometime between leaving the paddock and arriving at the starting gate for the Delaware race which likely accounted for her sluggish performance. Tim Doocy, who has ridden the chestnut filly in all five of her races, will make the trip in from Louisiana for the Arlington Oaks.
Meet Me At Midnite also comes out of the Delaware Oaks where she ran fifth in the nine-horse field. Prior to that, the General Meeting filly won back-to-back allowance races over a mile and a sixteenth at Churchill Downs. The Singapore Plate will be the first attempt at a mile and an eighth for the Rick Hiles trainee who will be ridden for the first time by C. H. Marquez Jr.
Slated to meet the top duo in the Singapore Plate are: William Stiritz' Wildwood Royal, E. T. Baird up; Ashby Thoroughbreds' Golden Reputashn, Chris Emigh in the irons; Douglas P. Gibson's Splasha, Frank Lovato Jr. slated for the tack; Richard Otto Stables Inc.'s Julie's Prize, Larry Sterling Jr. with the call; Horned Owl Stable's Lil Scout, Marlon St. Julien aboard; Tom Fedro, Darrell & Sadie Brommer's Keeping the Gold, Eusebio Razo Jr. with the mount; and Len Friedman, Jan Nilsen & Brom Keifetz' Austin's Mom, Ray Sibille astride.
Wildwood Royal, who hails from the downstate Fairmount Park barn of Jim Zook, vied for the lead in the Delaware Oaks before fading to finish seventh. Earlier in the summer, she prevailed at the end of a long stretch battle to take the $125,000 Iowa Oaks at Prairie Meadows and was also a wire-to-wire victress in the $50,000 Panthers Stakes at the Altoona, Iowa, racetrack. Between those races, she captured a $15,000 overnight handicap at her Fairmount Park homebase while shouldering 124 pounds.
Splasha invades from Florida off a 1¼-length tally in the $100,000 Office Queen Stakes at Calder Race Course on June 14, her first win in five starts this year. The David Vivian-trained daughter of Twining is also stakes placed in the $50,000 Gasparilla Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs in February.
Keeping the Gold and Julie's Prize, the one-two finishers against state-bred rivals in the $86,450 Purple Violet Stakes on Prairie State Festival Day June 21, face off again in the Singapore Plate. The former, trained by Chris Block, validated that effort when she returned to beat open fillies in the $52,400 Top Corsage Stakes at one mile.
The Don Von Hemel-trained Golden Reputashn last raced when finishing second to Wildwood Royal, beaten three-quarters of a length, in the Iowa Oaks.
Lil Scout, an Atticus filly trained by Austin Smith, has won three of her last four races at Mountaineer Park in West Virginia.
Austin's Mom, trained by Niall O'Callaghan, is still eligible for a second-level allowance race but ran a decent fourth after a rough start in the $100,000 Go For Wand Stakes at Delaware Park in May.
